Dr. Choong Kam Kow (Malaysia) 锺金钩博士 (马来西亚)

Dr. Choong Kam Kow, an artist of international fame and a prominent academician in the field of art and design education, obtained his BA in Fine Art from the National Taiwan Normal University in 1961 and Master in Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute, N.Y. USA in 1968.

In 1965, He received a Fulbright Grant to  study modern art in USA and another Fulbright-ACLS Fellowship in 1980 for research in contemporary art. In 2006, he was conferred the Honorary  Degree of Doctor of Arts by the Robert  Gordon University, Scotland for his achievements in fine art and contribution in art and design education.

In addition to the prestigious Fulbright Hays Awards, Choong has also won many prizes in art competitions including 1st prize (Drawing) & 2nd prize (water colour) in Virginia Art Show, 2nd prize (Landscape) in PNB Art Competition and 3rd prize in Association of Bank Art Competition etc.

To-date, Choong has held 18 solo exhibitions in Art museums and galleries including the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan, Guangdong Museum of Art, Taipei Fine Art Museum and Taiwan Museum of Art and participated in nearly 100 major local and international art exhibitions.

He is currently the Chairman of Federation of Asian Artists Malaysia Committee. He has served as  a member of the National Art Gallery Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2009 and as a member of  the Acquisition Committee from 2002 to 2006.

His works are in the collections of the National Art Gallery, Malaysia, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC,USA, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan, Singapore Art Museum,  Taiwan Museum of Art, Taichung, , Frederikshavn Museum of Art, Denmark, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taiwan, Guangdong Museum of art, China, Kyushu Sangyo University Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan , Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in University City, Guangzhou, China and numerous public and  private institutions ,corporations and collectors.

Choong started his career as an artist cum art teacher in primary and secondary schools in the late 50’s and early 60’s before he traveled as a visiting artist to USA under a Fulbright Grant in mid. 60’s. Choong has served as Head of Art Department, United Nations International School, NYC (1966-1968); Head of Fine Art Dept. and senior lecturer (Ass. Prof.), ITM (now UiTM) –(1969-1989); Dean of School of Fine Art, LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore 1989-94; Vice President (1995-1999) and President/CEO (2000-2009) of Malaysian Institute of Art , Kuala Lumpur.

Choong as an artist has been exposed to, and influenced by,  the Abstract Expressionism,Pop Art, Hardedge, Conceptualism and international art movements duing his stay in New York in the 1960s and early 80’s. He has gone through the aesthetic assimilation and preservation process during his artistic journey and at the same time engaged himself in significant exploration and intergration of these experiences into his own art.

His art reflects his ceaseless probes into culture and history, theory and practice, humanity and matters, techniques and media. He possessed the intellectual spirit of the present era and beyond and used it to probe into his cultural surroundings, integrated and synthesized, to define new meanings and values in his creative endeavour.
